What Is a Patient Hoist? How It Works and How to Use One at Home

What Is a Patient Hoist

A patient hoist is a lifting device that moves a person using a sling. It helps with transfers between bed, chair, wheelchair, bath and toilet. It takes the lifting off the carer’s back, so nobody has to lift by hand. At Dubai Mobility, you can buy the ICON Portable Hoist or rent a patient hoist from AED 150 a day.

Some people call them hoist lifts, or simply a hoist machine for patients. Whatever the name, the idea is the same. Below, we explain how a hoist works and what to check before using one. We also cover whether it will fit your home.

What is a Patient Hoist, in Plain Terms?

Think of a patient hoist as a small crane made for people. A sling goes around the person, and its loops attach to a spreader bar. The spreader bar hangs from a curved boom, which raises and lowers the person. The carer then moves the hoist using a push bar, and lowers the person gently onto the next seat.

The ICON Portable Hoist is a compact, battery-operated patient hoist. It’s designed for transfers between bed, chair, wheelchair, bath and toilet. It’s made for small spaces and doorways that aren’t a standard width. It also removes manual lifting from the transfer entirely.

How Does a Portable Hoist Work?

The lifting arm on the ICON Portable Hoist runs on a battery. It lifts at 30 mm a second and manages up to 40 lifts on a single charge. A battery status indicator shows how much charge is left.

The legs at the base can spread wider or close in. This lets the hoist get close to beds, chairs and wheelchairs. With an optional sling, it can also lift someone from the floor in an emergency. When it isn’t in use, it folds and can be dismantled.

Choosing the Right Sling

A hoist does nothing without a sling, and slings are sold separately. The ICON Portable Hoist uses standard loop slings. Different sling designs suit general transfers, toileting and bathing, and the team can help you choose. An optional sling is needed for emergency lifts from the floor.

NHS guidance is clear that the sling matters as much as the hoist. A Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust policy says to use the correct type and size of sling for the person. It also says the sling’s safe working load should be the same as, or more than, the hoist’s. Ask an occupational therapist or physiotherapist to help assess which sling fits.

How to Use a Patient Hoist at Home Safely

Hoisting is a skill, and it’s worth learning properly before the first transfer. The NHS policy above is written for care staff, but its basic checks make sense at home too. Rental equipment comes with a full demonstration at delivery, so ask any questions then.

  1. Check the sling before every use. Look for holes, repairs, frayed edges or worn loops, and don’t use it if you find any.
  2. Check the hoist. The legs should open and close easily, and the controls should raise and lower the boom.
  3. Make sure every sling loop is attached properly. An NHS Scotland safety notice warns that new loops can be stiff and may unhook without being noticed.
  4. Have two people for the transfer. The NHS policy says to use at least two carers with a mobile hoist.
  5. Keep the brakes off while you’re hoisting. The policy says not to apply brakes during hoisting with mobile hoists.
  6. Never leave the person alone in the hoist, and avoid long periods in the sling. A hoist is for transfers, not for moving someone around the house.
  7. Keep the battery charged. Charge the hoist when it isn’t in use, and unplug it from the mains before you start a lift.

If the hoist stops working during a transfer, stop and contact the supplier. Electric hoists should have a manual override for a power failure, so ask where yours is when it arrives. If anything changes with the person’s condition or the equipment, review how you hoist.

Will a Portable Hoist Fit Your Home?

Measure before you commit, especially in a smaller bedroom or bathroom. The hoist needs about 1,400 mm to turn. With the legs open, the inside width is 1,020 mm, which helps when you’re working around a chair or wheelchair. The legs stand 115 mm high, so check the gap under the bed or chair you’ll hoist from.

Doorways matter too. The ICON Portable Hoist is made for doorways that aren’t a standard width, but it’s still worth measuring yours. For room-by-room ideas, see the guide to setting up your Dubai home for limited mobility.

Should you Rent or Buy a Patient Hoist?

Hoist lifts can be rented or bought. Rental suits short-term recovery or a temporary need. The patient hoist rental costs AED 150 a day and takes users up to 180 kg. If you also need a sling, contact the team when you book. For more than 8 days, you can ask for a custom quote. The team delivers and sets it up at your home, villa or apartment.

Buying may suit longer-term care at home. The ICON Portable Hoist comes with home delivery and setup, and flexible payment options are available. Its price isn’t listed online, so ask the team for a quote. Either way, you can talk through slings and room sizes before you decide.
