NXT Optima Carbon Thoracic Back Support

The Optima Carbon Thoracic Back Support was specifically designed for optimal pelvic positioning while providing proper support to the user’s thoracic region. The Optima Carbon Back Support is manufactured from T700 high-modulus carbon fibre, the lightest and most rigid carbon fibre available. This back support is ideal for those active users who wish to keep the total weight of their chair down without sacrificing material strength or performance. The Optima is available in a Standard and Deep lateral contour depth. The Deep offers an adjustable depth of 5.5 in. to 7 in. (14 cm to 17.8 cm) for optimal mid-line support and positioning.

NXT back supports offer pelvic or thoracic shapes having posterior, posterior lateral and posterior deep lateral supports. The full or scapula cut-out shapes are designed to provide excellent support and comfort while enhancing the user’s natural range of motion. The Quick-Fit hardware is fully adjustable, and the pelvic positioning pads provide optimal pelvis positioning for exceptional comfort and support.

One-handed quick release The simple-to-operate one-handed, quick-release bar allows the back support to be easily removed from the chair.	Pelvic positioning cut-out The pelvic positioning cut-out provides a space for the buttocks to protrude beyond the back for a better, more natural seated position.
smartx3D cover The smartx3D uses a three-layer technology that includes two separate fabrics joined by a monofilament yarn that creates a breathable channel between the two fabrics. It is this channel that gives smartx3D its 3D structure and creates a “micro-climate” between layers. Heat and vapour move easily through the highly permeable fabric layer. smartx3D naturally offers a four-way stretch which provides enhanced immersion, aiding in pressure redistribution. Soft, breathable, resistant to pilling and with moisture-wicking properties, smartx3D offers the ultimate in comfort.	smartGEL The combination of NXT’s smartx3D fabric and smartGEL foam provides the ultimate comfort and support. NXT’s smartGEL foam offers a higher IFD (Indent Force Deflection and Density), yet it is incredibly soft, highly resilient, and long-lasting. The gel is incorporated into the foam mixture at the molecular level, which allows for 100% homogeneous cooling with no breakdown of embedded gel beads. This reduces surface temperature, drawing heat away from the skin while providing superior comfort and softness.

Preventing pressure ulcers

It can be difficult to completely prevent pressure ulcers, but there are some things you or your care team can do to reduce the risk.

These include:

• Regularly changing your position – if you’re unable to change position yourself, a relative or carer will need to help you
• Checking your skin every day for early signs and symptoms of pressure ulcers – your care team will do this if you’re in a hospital or care home
• Have a healthy, balanced diet that contains enough protein and a good variety of vitamins and minerals – if you’re concerned about your diet or caring for someone whose diet may be poor, ask your GP or healthcare team for a referral to a dietitian
• Stopping smoking – smoking makes you more likely to get pressure ulcers because of the damage caused to blood circulation

If you’re in a hospital or care home, your healthcare team should be aware of the risk of developing pressure ulcers. They should carry out a risk assessment, monitor your skin and use preventative measures, such as regular repositioning.
